Unemployment Information

"We provide workforce services that promote maximum employment to enhance the economic stability of Virginia."

– The VEC Mission

When you've recently become unemployed, you have many questions about qualifying for and receiving benefits. The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) is pleased to provide you with easy access to information about job opportunities and the Commonwealth of Virginia labor market.

The VEC provides many services including veteran’s employment, labor market information and job seeking services through Virginia's Automated Labor Exchange system (ALEX).

All VEC resources are available to assist in veteran job referral and placement. Local Veterans Employment Representatives (LVERs) and Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) staff are available in most VEC offices to offer veterans preference in employment services.
Virginia’s Electronic Labor Market Access System allows you to review 2010 census information, gather local industry status and understand demand and average salaries are for various positions.

ALEX (Automated Labor Exchange System) offers job seekers several options for a self-directed job search. You can customize your search to specific Virginia cities, counties, and a national job search by state, military specialty, government jobs, and other national sites for jobs and employment information. You can use this service at any VEC field office or online.
